Milk Facts

  • Milk is an important source of many essential vitamins and minerals in American’s diets. For example, milk supplies calcium, vitamins A, D, Potassium, and riboflavin.

  • Heart disease is the number one killer in Fulton and Montgomery Counties. Saturated fat is a major contributor to the risk of heart disease. Whole milk is the third largest contributor of saturated fat in the adult American’s diet, and is the first largest contributor of saturated fat for children. Fat-free (skim) and 1% milk are great sources of nutrients and flavor, and have little or no saturated fat.

  • 1% and fat–free milk may taste better than you think. In blind taste tests 9 out of 10 people like the taste of low-fat (1%) or fat-free milk.

  •  Low fat (1%) and fat-free milk do not provide enough calories and fat for babies. Children between the ages of 1 and 2 should drink whole milk. The U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend that after age 2, children should gradually transition to a diet containing equal to or less than 30% of calories.A new milk labeling law went into effect January 1, 1998. It requires that 2% milk be labeled correctly as “ reduced-fat, 1% milk as “ low-fat, and skim milk as “fat-free.

  • 25 million Americans have osteoporosis, which causes 1.5 million fractures a year. A healthy diet-especially adequate calcium consumption- and weight bearing exercise can help build bone mass and prevent serious fractures.

  • Since 95% of maximum bone density is reached by age 18, it is especially important that kids get enough calcium. The average teenage girl consumes less than two thirds of the recommended level (RDA) of calcium each day.

  • Parents can help their teens (girls in particular) get enough calcium by making sure that they have milk in the house. Fat-free milk is only 90 calories and 0 grams of fat in an 8 ounce serving.

In blind taste tests of more than 1,800 people, almost all like the taste of low-fat milk. More than 80% of tasters like the taste of fat free milk and 95% liked the taste of either 1% or fat free milk. Make the healthy Choice. 1% and fat free milk have all the calcium and vitamins A and D found in whole milk, without all the saturated fat.
